Why we attack our own thesis

A thesis is not a story you like. It is a claim with a way to be wrong. Most of the time we collect reasons to stay comfortable. A red team does the opposite. It looks for the fact that breaks the claim, and it looks while the cost of being wrong is still a blank page.

A sentence, not a speech

If the idea needs a paragraph, it is still a mood. Write one sentence: what you believe, what would have to stay true, and what event would change a skeptical person’s mind. The sentence can be dull. Dull is a feature. Dull can be checked.

“The company is a compounder” is not a thesis. “Volume holds if the renewal with the largest customer is signed before the fiscal year ends” is closer. It names a customer, a document, and a date. Those are things a bear can attack.

Agreement is not evidence

A group chat, a clip, and a confident voice can all point the same way. That is agreement. Evidence is a filing, a contract, a price paid by a customer, a date on a calendar. When you attack the thesis, you are not looking for a hotter take. You are looking for the document the claim quietly skipped.

Write the bear case in the same form as the bull case. One sentence, then the facts that would make it true. If the bear case is only “the stock looks expensive,” you have a feeling, not an attack. Expensive compared with what, and what would make that comparison the wrong one?

The market is the other side

You do not need a villain. The market is just everyone else, including people who have already done this work and people who have not. Your job is not to win an argument with them. Your job is to know which fact you are leaning on. If that fact is thin, the honest status is unresolved. Unresolved is allowed. Pretending it is settled is how a tip becomes a position you cannot explain.

What this is not

This is a way of writing. It is not a promise that careful people make money, and it is not a reason to buy or sell anything. Past results do not travel forward just because the notes were neat. The written review exists so you can see, later, whether you followed the page you wrote. That is the whole point of attacking the thesis first.
